Well, this has been a long and involved story,
but... I could have done a safe boot, but it
wouldn't have helped. There were too many
strange things going on that I couldn't trace.

I started reinstalling windows on Saturday
morning, and it was great for a few hours. Then,
as I was installing my various software packages,
I started to get errors about programs not being
able to write to the registry, or not updating
properly. In short, even the fresh install had not solved the problems.

This only left hardware, and I started to realise
that everything had started pretty much just
after I installed the SSD... I ended up pulling
in a backup taken before that, and moving
everything back to the normal hard disk. I have
been sorting things out ever since, but it
certainly beat doing the full install. I have
not had any more strange occurrences.

I *did* lose a whole bunch of icons from my
desktop when I restored from the backup, which is
a bit peculiar. Probably a logical reason somewhere, I guess.

I have been on to the company about returning the
SSD. They gave me some spiel about it being due
to too many low-level writes, or something. The
fix was to disconnect the data cable and leave
the device plugged in but not working for as long
as possible. After the past few weeks, I really
don't trust the thing. It is left plugged in
overnight, but hadn't fixed itself. The problems
started pretty much just after the install, so it
wasn't a case of my use jamming it up or
anything. If it is going to do that every few
weeks, it is no use. You never know what program
is going to be affected next. I am pushing for a
refund, but may have to accept a
replacement. Looking at their forum, many users
are having various problems with this device. I
think it is just not ready for prime time, basically.

I haven't got back to Finale just yet, but it's on the list...

Phil.
