Hi Brian, Please please please report to MakeMusic! I'm so glad someone else can confirm this problem! (I thought I was the only one experiencing this usse.)
The workaround for muting playback with MIDI Thru on is to set it to "Fixed" and choose an unused channel (e.g., 99).
