One of the most infuriating aspects of Finale (2014) I'm finding at the moment
is how the 'Change Instrument' Utility affects the VST instruments.
I'll give an example. I'm currently working on a piece where I have 5 VST banks
in use. Almost each one of those has anywhere from 4-12 instruments loaded, so
in total around 35 patches loaded across these 5 banks.
When I use Change Instrument (in those situations where I have to, such as
changing from tuned to untuned percussion, or switching to a transposed
instrument), Finale basically wipes one of my existing banks to make room for
either it's SmartMusic Softsynth or the ARIA player, neither of which I want to
use, and of course I definitely don't want it to wipe my bank, as it means I
have to go in and load each instrument in that bank up again, but this is
exactly what it does. This has happened so many times now, and it wastes so
much time. Thankfully I keep a spreadsheet in Google detailing every patch in
use on a piece and it's channel, track, etc., but even then, it's sort of a
crazy behaviour on Finale's part, and it's eating a lot of time and patience.
Is there some setting I'm missing that allows instrument change not to have any
effect on the playback instruments? (Most of which I prefer to do with Text
Expressions with channel changed on them anyway).
Anyone else wrestling with this? Any suggestions? I notice there's a menu
option called "Sound Map Priority" but the only thing in it is the Smartmusic
Softsynth.
