I am not sure longer ledger lines are of any benefit.
For me it is way more important that ledger lines are separated from each other
horizontally. If they touch or overlap they are next to impossible to discern
from staff lines. Finale’s default keeps ledger lines separated, but if the
engraver squeezes too many measures into a staff then they will touch or
overlap.

Subject: [Finale] Darken staff lines

In addition to increasing the default settings for line thickness
(I prefer 0.012" for most "thin" lines including staff and leger lines,
barlines, repeat endings etc.) have you tried increasing the length of
the bits that stick out to the sides of leger line notes and rests?
(I'm using Windows, F.2014.)

Document / Document Options / Lines and Curves

I have the sideways extensions set to 0.028" (Finale doesn't like that and
changes it to something with more decimal places) for both notes and rests.
It may mean you need to allow extra horizontal space between notes on leger
lines so they don't run into each other and confuse where the staff begins
and ends. I think that's what Klaus was referring to (sorry, couldn't follow
that link).
