Please forgive the cross-posting: MuseScore (the free notation program) http://musescore.org/
Version 2 has been released in a "final release candidate" with the actual version 2 coming on March 24th. The only difference according to the web-site is that the actual version 2 coming on March 24th will have been translated into more languages. This is becoming a very worthwhile competitor for Sibelius and Finale and Notion and whatever software Steinberg finally releases. It has many of the features of the commercial products, all for free. Here is a link to the Handbook as a single long page with links from the table of contents: <http://musescore.org/en/print/book/export/html/36546?toc=1> for those who want to learn more before deciding whether to download and install or not. They've added an inspector like Sibelius has to make editing specific items easier. They've added a new-score-wizard like both Finale and Sibelius have. In a huge improvement over Sibelius version 7, the inspector can be left open on-screen (it changes what can be edited according to what has been selected in the score). This is like earlier versions of Sibelius had and a feature which I wish Sibelius 7 had retained. They've added many other features and really moved the program forward in a major leap toward quality engraving. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already done so (you can't argue with the price!) and is certainly worth recommending for students, in my opinion. -- David H.
