Robert, what version are you running? I've crashed about ten times in the last week, and I've always found the .asv file afterwards, usually with very little music lost (mine also saves every five minutes, and it's a little annoying, because it breaks my chain of thought, but when I have a crash,. it's worth it).
If you 'open recent,' that'll open the last .mus file you saved, which won't have the new material, and in mac, sometimes the file might not be saved in the folder in which you saved the last .mus file. Sometimes I have to hunt around for the .asv As an extremely low-tech solution (something I started doing when I couldn't get an old version of Finale to auto-save), I just hit 'save-as' every ten minutes or so.
