Yesterday I received an email from Melanie from Customer Support with the solution. She wrote:
----- Hello Barbara, The MIDI Out section in the MIDI Setup is only used if you need to send MIDI back into your keyboard to utilize the built in sounds. You mentioned that your keyboard was pretty small. I'm guessing that it doesn't have speakers on it so the program might be recognizing that it doesn't have anywhere to send that MIDI. The reason that you are currently hearing playback is because of the selections made in the Audio Setup window. As long as the selections in that window stick, you should be good to go.
