It may not have been created at all -- that's the issue. I had a similar bug. It appeared to do something, gave no error message, but created no file (if my memory is correct). I cannot remember exactly how this was resolved, but we eventually found a combination of parameters for the audio setup that allowed the render to work.
I always render to WAV, FWIW.
