Dear fellow computer music notation users, I know that polymetric notation (with barlines which don't line up) has long been a point of frustration in computer notation programs, at least in Finale and Sibelius. Yes, most allow for different meters but the barlines have always had to line up from staff to staff no matter the signature, so for example having one staff in 2/4 and another in 6/8 makes the quarter note in 2/4 equal in length to the dotted-quarter in 6/8, making the 8th notes in the 6/8 sound like triplets in the 2/4 staff.
Dorico allows true polymetric notation, where the speed of the 8th notes will remain constant in all the staves, but the barlines will not line up with each other. Right now it's still in its infancy and will hopefully allow for more complex polymetric options. But it's there. I just thought that the curious ought to know -- I'm not trying to convince anybody to make the jump to Dorico, but the development team has paid a lot of attention to the frustrations and wishes that many of us have posted in these groups over the years. -- ***** David H.
