I don’t remember whether Finale 2012 has the new Change Instrument feature or not. If it does, select the passage and go to the Utilities menu. If the last item is Change Instrument, you’re in. Choose Alto Flute, and the transposition, playback, and abbreviated staff name in the score will all change for you automatically.
If you only choose one measure, then the entire staff changes from that measure to the end of the document. This is a very useful feature. No more need to screw around with independent key signatures and staff styles for transposition and the like. Whew.
