Through the Heart of the Community:
Celebrate the dual designation of State Street/Martin Luther King Street!

A few years ago, the young men in the Circle of Recovery at Ithaca High School
had the idea to re-name one of Ithaca ’s city streets after Martin Luther
King, Jr. A diverse group, they had met together for four years. They had
studied many leaders, including King, were inspired, and offered this idea in
the way of giving back to the community. State Street was the street that was
chosen. State Street goes through the heart of the city, and it connects
different neighborhoods: low-income, businesses, students, and higher
incomes.

After several years of meetings, grass-roots organizing, and public events, a
committee of citizens designated by the Mayor decided unanimously that State
Street WILL be dually designated! This means that those businesses and people
who live on State Street can use either name for their address and it will be
recognized by the Post Office. There will be a public ceremony and “unveiling”
of the new street signs on Monday, January 19, 2009, at 9 am at the corner of
W. State and N. Albany.

Come celebrate with us as we walk through the heart of the community -- the
whole length of State Street -- just before this ceremony! Some will
walk from the east, some from the west. Let’s come in singing and join at 9 am
at State and Albany !

Details:

For those coming from the east: we can take the #53 TCAT bus from the library
(cost: $1.50. Kids five and under ride free. Kids over 5 years old need
$1.25.) at 8:12. This will take us up State Street to the city limit where we
can get off and start walking. So we will start walking around 8:18. The total
walk is about a mile and a half, and most of it is downhill. We should easily
get to State and Albany by 9 am. If you live along the way, join us!

For those coming from the west: meet on the bridge over the inlet, just west
of Ithaca Paint and Decorating, at 8:35. By leaving at 8:40, we will easily
make it to State and Albany by 9am.

After the ceremony, everyone is invited to proceed to GIAC where there will be
a full day of activities honoring Dr. King.
