The Cornell Small Farms Program and Northeast SARE are pleased to
co-sponsor an upcoming dairy grazing workshop, titled "Step It Up in 2010:
A Winter Grazing Gathering". The workshop will take place on Thursday,
February 25th, from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. at BW’s Restaurant, 11070 Perry
Road, Pavilion NY 14525.

Guest speakers Rick and Terri Hawbaker from Pewamo, Michigan will start
off the day sharing their experiences with seasonal grazing. The Hawbakers
have built their dairy (including their swing-parlor milking center) from
the ground-up. They will discuss how they have used internal herd growth
to establish their dairy, trading labor for custom work, and out-wintering
their herd.

Next, Tom Ormond from Ormond Dairy Farm in Kennedy, NY will talk about
early spring grazing/winter rye, heifers on pasture, and using cows as a
cash crop. Finally, Debbie Cherney, Associate Animal Science Professor at
Cornell will talk about how the grass plant stores energy and how the
farmer and their cows can harvest more of it. Cherney will also talk
about the new High Energy Grasses on the market.

Please register by Thursday, February 18th by calling 585-786-2251 or email
wyomingcounty...@cornell.edu. A registration fee of $25 per person ($35
for non-enrollees) will include coffee, donuts, and a hot lunch.

This program is presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of
Wyoming County and the CCE North West New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field
Crops Team.
