Just to second other responses here, I would highly reccomend OroborOSX
if you intend to run XDarwin rootless on OS X.
I myself am a great fan of twm for simple window management tasks (I use
it a lot in conjunction with a number of VNC X sessions at work as it's
so leightweight), and also experienced the same crashing issues with twm
that others on this list have had. By running twm from the Terminal app
and enabling some debug malloc enviroment variables I WAS able to get it
to run - but it had the same issue I've had with other window managers
under OSX (OK, blackbox is the only other one I tried besides Oroborosx)
where dragging the windows would not even give you an outline of the
dragged window, so you had no cues as to where a window would really end
up.

OroborOSX windows move just as normal OS X windows do, and as a bonus
have themes that look just like either the color or moncrome Auqua
interface if you like so it's not as jarring having different window
controls and appearances. They are a bit more sluggish to move and
resize, but at least I can see where windows are going now!

At last, XEmacs is usable under OSX (not that I still wouldn't welcome a
smoothly-working native version).
