Brian,
Install system-xfree86 if you already have XFree86 installed. Install
system-xtools if you already have Tenon XTools installed. Its one or the
other.

When installing X11 via fink and X11 is already installed by some other
mechanism there
is a message to try to help you manage that. Does the following text
from that message
mean what it says or is it jumbled. It seems it might be trying to
say
"install system-xfree86 and system-xtools respectively"
but comes out...
"If you want to keep your X11 installation, install
system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system."
