If installing OpenSSL proves to be a prob, I should mention that Python 2.2 (python-2.2.tgz at www.python.org) installs just fine out of the box with a default ./configure -- the Fink installation may offer some features that aren't in the default distribution, so perhaps you need to use Fink, but I don't have OpenSSL and a simple "./configure; make; make install" got me up and running with no probs.
