Do the following: put a command to execute your favorite window manager ahead of the gnome-session:
exec fvwm & exec gnome-session (for example. Replace fvwm with your favorite window manager) When you choose Log Out from GNOME XDarwin will quit, too. You can reverse this, too, with the window manager coming after gnome-session: exec gnome-session & exec fvwm (the last command must not have an &, but all preceding ones should.) The difference is that in this case, when you choose Log Out from GNOME, it will only quit GNOME, but will leave your window manager running. -- Alexander K.
