I'd tell you it's worth it in the end, but really that's for you to
decide. TO be fair though, you're trying to run non-native software here,
and though it can be done, it does mean taking on a bit of overhead to
make it work. This isn't all that different than trying to run Classic
software -- that also involves having to support a big compatibility
layer. Being more native would be nice, but OSX isn't there yet...

Did you try building it with Fink?

   % sudo fink install gnumeric

This will probably ask you to install still more packages -- quite a lot
of them actually:

    Depends: gettext (>= 0.10.40-2), glib, gtk+, gnome-libs, libglade,
             gal19-shlibs, gnome-print, libxml, bonobo (>= 1.0.9),
             libole2 (>= 0.2.4-1)
    BuildDepends: libxml2 (>= 2.4.13), gal19, gdk-pixbuf (>= 0.16.0-3)

SOme of those you may already have, others you'll need to let Fink grab &
build for you. Once the dependencies are satisfied, then you can build and
run Gnumeric.

You might also want to try Abs, which depends only on x11 (which you say
you've already installed). Not sure how well it compares to Gnumeric, but
you're much closer to being able to run it already. It's available in
unstable, so to install it you'll have to copy some files from there to
local, then run Fink:

    % sudo cp /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/sci/abs-0.908-1.* \
                 /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo/sci/
    % sudo fink install abs

There's also Siag, but I haven't tried it. Siag has more dependencies than
Abs, but fewer than Gnumeric. It's in .../unstable/main/finkinfo/x11/.
