You have a few questions tangled up in there. * Fink is a program that uses a bunch of other helper programs to catalog packages, download them, configure build & install. It really doesn't do any of these steps itself. * CVS isn't a download method. It is a system (and again, a command) for mainting Concurrent Versions of files. When using CVS to update Fink, you are bringing the catalog of available packages on your hard drive up to date with the authoritative version on Fink's site. You don't ever need to do this (everyone is welcome to use outdated software), and the decision to download or not has nothing to do with CVS. * The other download methods you're thinking of are probably 'curl' & 'wget', both of which are command line tools for grabbing & saving online documents from the web, ftp, and other sources. They're more simiilar than different -- basically they solve the same task but provide somewhat different interfaces for getting there. Comparing them to CVS is like comparing a diesel, a gas engine, and a roadmap: two are methods of getting there, the other suggests where to go.
