Well, you don't need gnome to run the gimp.
If you REALLY want gnome then get bundle-gnome.
An excellent wm is available from
http://wrench.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/software/oroborosx/
It works very well with fink packages including gnome.
After some time and experience you may (or not) want to
try other wm's through fink.
With a virgin fink install you will need to download quite a
few packages...however, all you need is a 12 pack and
let fink do it all for you.
Fink, for me, is FAR better than Gnu-Darwin or OpenOSX
or whatever else is out there. Fink installs EVERYTHING in one folder (ok, directory)
and not helterfreakin'skelter all over your mac except x-11...but that is such
a minor inconvenience I almost forgot to mention it.
Be certain to READ...and refer back to...all the documentation on the
website. Several times.
