That's why I was asking (in anotehr mail to another thread), what 
"which gzip" and "gzip --version" give, i.e. to see if gzip runs at 
all.

Also, it might be worth a try to compress a file with the "bad" gzip 
and decompress it with the "good" one, and vice versa, to see if this 
works correct or not.
