I'll answer the quick question first.  You'll want to use 'startx -- -quartz' 
for fullscreen mode, or 'startx -- -rootless' for rootless mode, after you 
get everything working.

Now, we'll need some more information.  You don't have /usr/bin/X11R6/X .  
This suggests that your XFree86 installation is incomplete.  Do you in fact 
have xfree86-rootless installed in addition to xfree86-base?
