Norman: It looks like your make is not gnumake. You should have ls -l /usr/bin/make lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 7 Jun 8 17:42 /usr/bin/make -> gnumake
If it is a symlink to bsdmake, it won't work with many fink packages.
