I just installed the last version of Fink and then XFree4-2.0, both xfree66-base and xfree86-rootless, on this powerbook G4 550.
When I enter in pure Darwin with >console, and then type startx, X comes up fine, running twm as instructed in the default xinitrc. 1) first (minor) problem: X always hangs on on exit. Currently the only way to get out is to kill -9 process_of_the_initial_shell, this way reverting immediately to Mac OS X login window. The xinitrc file also looks weird: twm & exec xterm -name login (etc...) The usual setup is (even fink documentation says that): xterm & exec twm As it is, if I close the login xterm, X immediately hangs on. Ctr-Alt_Del doesn't work, so I have to brute force switch off and on the entire computer, when I do this. 2) second (major) problem: inside Mac OS X, running Aqua, when I type startx -- -rootless, or startx -- -fullscreen, or startx -- -quartz, or any thing similar, I get this: usr/X11R6/bin-103 >startx -- -rootless 2002-07-18 23:48:57.579 XDarwin[738] No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist f ile, exiting giving up. xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. Going to the folder Applications, clicking on XDarwin.app, then Contents, then MacOS I get XDarwin, looking as a piece of paper, clicking on it gives as error: There is no application to open the document XDarwin" I tried to read as much documentation, Faqs, mailling list archives (both newbies and users) as possible, but so far no luck. Following an advice I saw in the archives, I removed /Applications/XDarwin.app and /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 and did: fink reinstall xfree86-base xfree86-rootless, but after just a couple minutes (the first time it took hours to compile everything) fink finnished up, and everything was just as in the beginning.
