Subject: [Fink-beginners] IMPORTANT - Fink binary distribution moves
Dear Fink users,
In the past, the whole binary distribution for Fink (the one you=3D3D3D3D20=
might or might not be using and which is accessed via the dselect =3D
/=3D3D3D3D20
apt-get tools) has been hosted on the SourceForge.net web servers=3D3D3D3D2=
0
that also hosts the Fink homepage.
However, this is less than ideal, since it generates lots of traffic=3D3D3D=
3D=3D
20=3D3D
on the web servers. Since the web servers are rate limited (after=3D3D3D3D=
20=3D
all, they have to serve other projects besides Fink), this means that=3D3D3=
D3=3D
D2=3D3D
0
download speeds are not as fast as one could wish.
On the other hand, SourceForge.net offers a dedicated download server=3D3D3=
D3=3D
D2=3D3D
0
network which has mirrors in the US and Europe. Since it is=3D3D3D3D20
specifically designed for this task, it offers superior download=3D3D3D3D20=
speeds.
Therefore, it was decided that the binary distibution is to be hosted=3D3D3=
D3=3D
D2=3D3D
0
on these dedicated file download servers, as it will take away load=3D3D3D3=
D2=3D
0
from the web servers, while at the same time the download experience=3D3D3D=
3D=3D
20=3D3D
for you, our users, is improved.
To this end, the whole binary distribution is already available in=3D3D3D3D=
20=3D
the new location. Everybody using "fink selfupdate-cvs" most probably=3D3D3=
D3=3D
D2=3D3D
0
already is using this new binary distribution. For anybody else, we=3D3D3D3=
D2=3D
0
provide instructions on how to switch here:=3D3D3D3D20
<http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/bindist_move.php>
We suggest that you switch as soon as possible. The old binary distro=3D3D3=
D3=3D
D2=3D3D
0
will be removed on Monday, July 22nd. Don't worry though, switching=3D3D3D3=
D2=3D
0
to the new binary distro will still be possible later on without=3D3D3D3D20=
problems.
In case you have any questions regarding this switch, feel free to=3D3D3D3D=

ask on one of our mailing lists:

Solution

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
For the googlers of the future:
The problem was that I had a bad ksh install that couldn't pick up ar (or
just about anything for that matter). I didn't know this since I use
tcsh and was also confirming path for ar in sh, which the configure
script runs in. For whatever reason configure decided to use ksh to try
to do the build and that caused problems.
Kudos to Keith Bostic and David Krinsky from Sleepycat and double kudos
to Peter O'Gorman, the Fink Berkeley Database maintainer for nailing
this. These guys rock.

Subject: [Fink-beginners] qt-designer 2.0
hi,
i'm a newbie and i've some question:
i've installed qt 3.0.4 with fink to develop a qt-app. i want to use the
qt-designer (i thought it is easier).
but i miss some features. there is less functionality than in the designer
compiled for suse-linux(x86).
but i can't believe, that the porting team cut functionality, only to port
it. could it be, that there has to be some special settings (path or
something else )?
had somebody of you a similar problem? how can i solve this problem?=3D3D3D=
3D=3D
20=3D3D
could it be somethimg else?
some missing features:
-i can open help, but there is shown nothing
-there is a frame "object explorer" with tab "source": i can only see the
half of the source-folder i can see under linux
-if i want to create a new file i can also choose only the half (i missing
the main.cpp)
-there is also some trouble with qmake
is there somewhere a install-guide or something else ??? could i've make a
mistake during the installation?
i hope you can help me.
thanks a lot

Subject: [Fink-beginners] Linking errors compiling a Qt app
Hi
I'm trying to compile a Qt 3 app I developed in Linux.
After changing a few path in my project makefile, all sourcefiles =3D3D3D
compile,=3D3D3D20
but at the last step I get:
/usr/bin/ld: warning prebinding disabled because dependent library:
/sw/lib/libxmms.1.dylib is not prebound
/usr/bin/ld: objects/xmms.o illegal reference to symbol: _g_list_append
defined in indirectly referenced dynamic library
(ps: I use xmmsctrl.h in my application)
/sw/lib/libglib-1.2.0.dylib
/usr/bin/ld: warning suggest use of -bind_at_load, as lazy binding may
result in errors or different symbols being used
(ps2: and xmmsctrl.h needs glib-1.2)
and then a bunch of:
symbol _FT_Get_Postscript_Name used from dynamic library
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib(ftbase.lo) not from earlier dynamic
library /sw/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib(ftbase.lo)
symbol _FT_Add_Module used from dynamic library
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib(ftbase.lo) not from earlier dynamic
library /sw/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib(ftbase.lo)
...
...
...
I checked /usr/X11R6/libfreetype.6.dylib and indeed, it pointed to
another version, so I changed it to point to the /sw/lib version to see =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
what would happen. Well, nothing happened.
As my fink system is not yet running smoothly (I oftimes get errors when
performing an update-all), I posted this on the beginners list.
I fetch my package descriptions directly from CVS (to get KDE3 working),
has this something to do with my errors? Was it a bad idea?
If yes, how do I go back?
greets from someone who is a bit lost in fink..

I had in the past got fink and a variety of programmes working. But =
=3D3D3D
then=3D3D3D20
I wanted to install kde and I had to change to Xfree86 from an earlier=3D3D=
3D=3D
20=3D3D
version that have. So I started new by rm /sw and reinstalling fink etc.
When downloading my machine doesn't like ftp sites and quits but it =
=3D3D3D
does=3D3D3D20
fine with http sites and this limits the places I can download.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This happens because the location of the packages file has changed=3D3D3D20=
(several months ago; this was not under our influence, so we have =3D
to=3D3D3D20
live with it).
Try this instead:
fink selfupdate-cvs

Hmmm.... I'm concerned that CVS is likely to contain unreliable=3D3D3D20
software. Once I update from CVS, can I get back to using more=3D3D3D20
stable distributions?

I'm new to XWindows and the whole unix thing, and hope this is the=3D3D20

I downloaded and installed Fink 0.4.0a onto my Powerbook with XFree=3D3D20
already installed (and working). I set up the ".cshrc" file closed=3D3D20
out of the terminal and then restated it to check for packages and=3D3D20
came up with this:
----------
Welcome to Darwin!
[localhost:~] doc% sudo -s
Password:
[localhost:~] root# fink scanpackages
OK? find scanpackages? yes
find: scanpackages: No such file or directory
----------
I have tried it without the sudo / with / many variations.
Any help would be appreciated. All I want to do it get GIMP running

Hi,
I'm getting errors when I start Gimp up in XDarwin.
Also I've noticed that I can't save files in certain

I was wondering is there anyway Fink can some how fix
the problems? I'm a newbie in the terminal so please
give detailed instructions :-).
Here are the errors that occur when I launch Gimp:

First, you don't have to sudo fink. It takes care of that by itself.
Second, on to the actual problem -- for some reason your .cshrc doesn't =
=3D
=3D3D
get
parsed correctly. This could be because of a lot of things. The common
reasons include: not in UNIX line endnings format, existence of .tcshrc in
same home directory. There are several other possible reasons though. Try
adding:
echo ".cshrc has been parsed correctly"
Together with a line break at the end of .cshrc, then when you open a new
terminal you should get a message saying what's between the quotes. If you
do, that will be a lead -- and if you don't that will be another. Try that
and report back!

Jon:
What window manager are you using? Fink is pretty good (no: overly =3D3D
good)=3D3D20
at installing dependencies, however I wonder if you are missing one =3D
or=3D3D20
two?
I do get a few listed errors when I start up GIMP from the terminal =3D
in=3D3D20
WindowMaker, but so far absolutely no bugs in the actual operation =
of=3D3D20
the software. It is almost as good as a commercial product.

Subject: [Fink-beginners] problems with XDarwin
I just installed the last version of Fink and then XFree4-2.0,
both xfree66-base and xfree86-rootless,
on this powerbook G4 550.
When I enter in pure Darwin with >console,
and then type startx, X comes up fine, running twm
as instructed in the default xinitrc.
1) first (minor) problem: X always hangs on on exit.
Currently the only way to get out is to kill -9 process_of_the_initial_shel=
=3D
=3D3D
l,
this way reverting immediately to Mac OS X login window. The xinitrc file
also looks weird:
twm &
exec xterm -name login (etc...)
The usual setup is (even fink documentation says that):
xterm &
exec twm
As it is, if I close the login xterm, X immediately hangs on.
Ctr-Alt_Del doesn't work, so I have to brute force switch off
and on the entire computer, when I do this.
2) second (major) problem: inside Mac OS X, running Aqua,
when I type startx -- -rootless, or startx -- -fullscreen,
or startx -- -quartz, or any thing similar, I get this:
usr/X11R6/bin-103 >startx -- -rootless
2002-07-18 23:48:57.579 XDarwin[738] No Info.plist file in application =

ile, exiting
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X =3D3D
server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
Links look fine:

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 14 Jul 18 22:56 X@ -> XDarwinStartup
However, I don't find nowhere the red X symbol used to launch X.
Going to the folder Applications, clicking on XDarwin.app, then Contents, =
=3D
=3D3D
then
MacOS I get XDarwin, looking as a piece of paper, clicking on it gives
as error: There is no application to open the document XDarwin"
I tried to read as much documentation, Faqs, mailling list archives=3D3D20
(both newbies and users) as possible, but so far no luck. Following
an advice I saw in the archives, I removed /Applications/XDarwin.app
and /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 and did: fink reinstall xfree86-base xfree86-ro=
=3D
=3D3D
otless,
but after just a couple minutes (the first time it took hours to
compile everything) fink finnished up, and everything was just
as in the beginning.
What shall I do?
Many thanks for your help!
