This is odd. This happened to me last night -- trying to run `startx --
-quartz' from the command line gave me the exact same error. I responded
with the following (apologies for cross-posting, but this seems relevant):

...This happened to me last night: I was using XDarwin, all fine and dandy.
I rebooted into OS 9 to work on some music, booted back into X a few hours
later and the XDarwin icon had been replaced by grey "?" in the Dock. My
XDarwin.app and appropriate files in /usr/X11R6/bin had completely
dissappeared.
I'm not sure what happened. I think that maybe I was previously using the
XDarwin app that's hidden inside my copy of OrborousX. When I tried to
launch it, the screen would blink grey and all, then it would quit.
I tried running `startx' from the ">console" and `startx -- -quartz' from
the command line, but both complained I didn't have an appropriate symlink
in /usr/X11R6/bin.
Not knowing exactly what to do, I ran `sudo fink reinstall xfree86-base' and
left it on for the night. This morning, nothing was different, except I have
a freshly recompiled X11 install.
After a lot of digging around, I found that the "Xquartz.tgz" archive on the
XFree86 download site...
