It's related to a change in the source URL. Due to Fink's present
structure, such an event always causes trouble, because not only the
package descriptions have to be changed, but the change has to propagate
to the users. In the case of giflib, there have even been two such
changes that apparently haven't made it to you.

The first problem was that the ftp://prtr-13.uscs.edu server doesn't
host giflib any more. This was fixed some 2 months ago by putting a copy
of the tar.gz on Fink's "own" server and changing the package
descriptions accordingly.

The second more recent problem was that the URL of Fink's "own" (in
reality hosted by sourceforge) server has changed, too. This was fixed
in the giflib package description a couple of days ago.

What remains to happen is to get this information onto your computer.
The standard automatic way is to update the package descriptions via cvs
("fink selfupdate-cvs" the first time, "fink selfupdate" afterwards).

If you don't want to or are not able to do this, you can get or read the
latest package descriptions from cvs via a browser and cvsweb. There is
a link to it on the Fink home page.
