Okay,
I get:
[localhost:~] brandonp% gnome-config --libs vfs
-L/sw/lib -lgnomevfs
[localhost:~] brandonp%
and when I use fink list I get (abbreviated):
i gnome-user-docs 1.4.1.1-2 General GNOME User Documentation
gnome-utils 1.4.1.2-3 GNOME utility programs
gnome-vfs 1.0.5-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
gnome-vfs-dev 1.0.5-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
gnome-vfs-shlib 1.0.5-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
i gnome-vfs-ssl 1.0.3-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries,
wi...
i gnome-vfs-ssl-d 1.0.3-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries,
wi...
i gnome-vfs-ssl-s 1.0.3-5 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries,
wi...
gnome-vfs2 2.0.1-2 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
gnome-vfs2-dev 2.0.1-2 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
gnome-vfs2-shli 2.0.1-2 The GNOME virtual file-system libraries
Let me be really clear on this, I'm not a *nix guy. :) I've very little
experience, mostly in the last couple of months. That's part of why I
appreciate fink so much. If I am understanding this conversation
correctly, then the pkg dependencies aren't correct so fink is trying to
install all I need, BUT when gcc is running, it's checking for some
items that aren't present. I'm not sure what vfs adds to the
gnome-config command, but libs is supposed to display the linked
libraries--but I'm not really sure what each does-I understand
dependencies to be essentially this---the system is modular
ie, You can add the stereo pkg to the car, but fink is supposed to make
sure there's a battery, cables to supply the power, speaker wires and
speakers to go with that stereo. Essentially the libraries are adding
functionality to the system so the programs can function properly. The
problem I have is that not all the libs I actually need are present (or
they're not linked if that's even a possibility).
So what do I need to do to fix the problem? Of course, truth be told the
problem is not really obvious. My X-Windows system is working fine
(except I can't launch control-center) and all the apps I want to use
work fine: gimp, abiword, gnumeric, xgalaga :)
When I had the problem with xemacs updating, I just removed it, since I
have no need (that I know of) for it anyway.
Should I remove my gnome-vfs-ssl** and install gnome-vfs2-***?
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but I have several
listings in dselect that show obsolete packages with no info (at the
top, when it first launches). I can't remove them because it tells me
most of my current software requires them. Why, if they're obsolete?
Hope I'm not rambling too much. Maybe I can contribute more solutions
when I get more experience. :)
Thanks for all the hard work and brainpower ya'll have put into the
project!
