In the gnome-terminal, all I do is type in gmc from my home directory 
and it runs.  Also, I have /sw/bin in my path.  I was thinking that it 
might be a permission thing so I did a "startx -- -quartz" under 
root--still didn't work.  Plus, I looked at the files and directories 
under /sw/share/gnome/apps, and mine looks like yours except you have a 
few more applications.
