I confirm this error. When cyrus-sasl is installed, dpkg does not build.
This is, of course, inadmissible. I am CC'ing the maintainers of both
packages.

Emily, for a short-term solution just rename /sw/include/md5.h or remove
cyrus-sasl while you compile dpkg.

I don't know what a durable solution of this problem is, maybe change
the compiler flags in dpkg? Right now they are

cc -no-cpp-precomp -I/sw/include -Wall -Wno-implicit -Wwrite-strings
-Wpointer-arith -Wimplicit -Wnested-externs -DHAVE_CONFIG_H
-D_GNU_SOURCE -DLOCALEDIR=\"/sw/share/locale\" -I../intl -I../intl
-I../include -I.. -I. -I../include -I.. -I. -I../optlib
-F/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework
-DCOPYINGFILE=\"/sw/share/doc/dpkg/copyright\" -c mlib.c

Maybe the -I/sw/include could be moved to a later position.

Or rename /sw/include/md5.h in cyrus-sasl. These files named md5.h seem
to proliferate: I find 16 of them (17 with the one in the dpkg sources)
on my system, and they are almost all different!
