This is what you should do, indeed.
This means "startx -- -quartz".

What you will eventually need is a file called ".xinitrc" in your home 
directory, in order to choose a window manager, to define what windows 
and applications will be opened at the start of X, to redefine some 
keyboard properties, etc. But you don't *need* one. XDarwin has its own 
default one and starts (with a pretty ugly and simple window manager) 
without one.
