What happens frequently (just had it happen to me earlier today): You 
did 'rm -rf /usr/X11R6' or something equivalent as part of a 
reinstallation of xfree86. Thereby you destroyed the files installed by 
xaw3d in this directory. Fink doesn't know about this and thinks xaw3d 
is still installed. "fink reinstall xaw3d" helps in this case.
