I asked this question in this forum (Sat, 7 Sep 2002 17:05:53 -0700) to no response whatsoever. I joined the Pan mailing list and asked the question and they traced it down to a missing config.xml file. Pan doesn't generate one automatically and the package-maintainer didn't install a default one. "Sans 10" is what Pan looks for if nothing is specified but we can't specify one if we never discover the format of the config.xml file. I asked people to send me a config.xml file but nobody sent one... though they discussed every other aspect of my problem.
