Martin is correct.
I just wanted to point out that I installed the updater straight, since I didn't know where to look in order to get the Dev Tools version number.
There is still a remote chance that I re-installed an already present update, although I doubt it (is it possible for a start?)...
I consider the g77 install trouble solved, although it is clear that some of my problems related to Xdarwin still remain.
I'll investigate this (plus comparison of g77 and Absoft Fortran) very soon.
I am on vacation right now, so I'll probably annoy everybody again in a week... ;)

I have some general questions, but I'll have a look first at the fink web site.
I don't know exactly what is wrong with it, but I find this site very hard to read...
Information (at least for beginners) is not easy to get...

Anyway, thanks again to those who help us newbies :)

The august dev tools are just a small updater to the July tools. Make
sure you install july first, then august.
While this is an important remark in general, Manuel said that he was able to install g77 now. This indicates that he has the complete set of dev tools. What seems to come out from this discussion is that without the August update, g77 (in fact, gcc3) does not build.
