This comes in fact from a previous thread, where I indicated that I found it hard to dive in Fink web pages.
Martin advised me to describe more in details 'what' could be bettered.
So here we go...
Disclaimer: these are my opinion, reflect my opinion, just my opinion, no more, and I wish this can help, so please, don't throw things at me :)

OK:
index page: http://fink.sourceforge.net/index.php
The introduction (The Fink project wants to bring ...) should be written entirely, since it really is important.
In fact, the 'about' page http://fink.sourceforge.net/about.php that you get when you press 'read more' IS the introduction of the web pages.

On the index page, 3 items:
News, Status and Resources.
These should not be written with the same size, since don't have the same interest;
Maybe the 'News' which at the present time fill the left part of the page should be deflated (by keeping just the title of the most recent news).
Status could be a box, or title at the same level than 'Fink unix sofware for your Mac', i.e. at the very top of the page.
Resources... This is the worst part for me...
Well, the summary brings back to sourceforge, where I got lost in 2 min... Too bad for my first attempt...
All the 'trackers' probably are interesting for skilled or experienced users. These should not be on the first page, where absolute newbies connect the first time...
Mailing list is really important, but is also mentioned in the Section list, so may be removed from Resources
CVS ... well now I see a little what it refers to, but it is not obvious for a beginner...

The 'trouble' of this first page shows in the Navigation index:
Why go from 'home' to 'About' when you press 'read more' (thus skipping 'News'),
Also 'Home', News' and 'About' already are present on the index page whereas 'Contributors' and 'Links' aren't?
In fact, some of the Links really are important (maybe more than others) and should be more accessible (highlighted?)

In summary, for the first page, I would 'air' it a little (it's too packed in there...).
I would put most of the content of 'About' since it explains what Fink is all about
Keep only the News Highlights (plus a link to more detailed news)
Suppress most of the Resources (put that in the Section menu)
Add some of the most relevant Links directly on the page (Fink Commander for example? it really is useful, and for a while I though it was a lost son of Fink, until I bumped into the reference in the Link section).

OK, I have to go for now.
Please let me know if it is worth trying to dig more in deeply in the web site...

Best regards,

Manuel
