Fink exists to make these things easier, by encapsulating all the busywork of patching, configuring and compiling it yourself. You can install fink in /usr/local if that is what you really want. Not really much reason to do so, and it is actually a bad idea IMO.

If you want help on how not to use fink, why would you ask on a fink list?
