Well since there are so many crash reports in this forum, at least a story with a good end...

I managed to re-install fink + g77 + Xfree on my G4 with 10.2.1, and all works fine.
(I now have to re-install the rpm tar balls I need... I touch wood...).
Maybe this can help some newbies like myself:
I could not launch Xdarwin, it failed for obscure reasons (I am also a unix novice).
I created a new user 'test' with basic rights.
When I logged as 'test', I was able to launch Xfree, then OroborOsX.
This proved that something was wrong in my normal (i.e. usual account) init files (.tcshrc and so forth), and I eventually corrected that.
Also, at a certain time, Xfree tried to created a directory in /tmp (.X11 something...), and complained that the owner should be root rather than me...
I removed that directory... I don't know if that helped, but now it's working OK...

OK some questions now:
I use FinkCommander.
It shows the status of all packages.
Why are some of them 'archived'? Does this mean that they are kept 'just in case' or can I remove them?
Well, in fact the question is: should I remove them, and if not why?
Here are the 'archived' packages:
apt-dev
cvs
libdv-bin
qt3-bin
qt3-doc

Also, I see on the Fink commander list of packages:
xfree86-base
xfree86-base-shlibs
xfree86-base-threaded
xfree86-base-threaded-shlibs
xfree86-rootless
xfree86-rootless-shlibs
xfree86-rootless-threaded
xfree86-rootless-threaded-shlibs
Could someone indicate what are these packages for, the difference between them?
I think I see the diff between base and rootless, but what are shlibs, or threaded packages?

Thanks to all,

Manu
