Think of it as three layers:

X11
GNOME/KDE
Window Manager

Not all window managers require either Gnome or KDE; and some
applications require other graphics libraries like Lesstif. It's pretty
complex, but for now, assume that all X apps require X11 + a Window
Manager, and most require either GNOME or KDE.
