What are the advantages/disadvantages to using fink to install from the
source versus using apt-get or dselect to install from binaries?
First, there are cases which don't allow installing via apt-get: if you're running Jaguar, you should, at the moment, install sources.

Then, if you know a package exists in a newer version, but it has not been compiled yet, you can compile it from the sources and then, if it compiles, you have the new version immediately.

You can also try to modify a source or apply patches or recompile it with extensions, etc...

I've used apt-get and dselect for a while, but there was too much trouble for me. Now I use Fink cvs (OK, I must) and it's far easier to handle dependancies. I'll guess I'll be using it even after the Jaguar binaries are released.
