It should work, I think -- what was the error output? Supply that (i.e. the last lines of the output from your terminal), together with info on your system (OS version, fink version 'fink -V' etc.) and someone on the list should hopefully be able to help you.

You could, but then you would have to port the stuff yourself, and the idea with fink is that fink should do that for you.
