Following up on an idea discussed with Kow off-line I booted my dual-processor Mac into single-cpu mode and tried again.

kdelibs3-ssl then compiled without a crash and I'm deep into an install of bundle-kde-ssl without problems so far (I was never able to compile it in the past)

So there is indeed an issue with the dual processors and the compiler. Sure it would be nice to go faster. But going somewhere is hugely better!!!
