I've just downloaded and installed Fink with quite a specific aim - to instal proftpd. While this may seem like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, Fink's praises are sung high and low so I thought I better give it a(nother) go!

Having spent some time delving around in the online documentation, I have found that proftpd is part of the unstable branch of Fink. Being a good chap, I started to follow the instructions for copying the appropriate .info package across from the unstable/main/ directory to the local/main/ directory. However, the .info file is for an older copy of proftpd. Searching on the web site, the latest release version of proftpd is (or should be) available through Fink.

How can I update the unstable branch to the latest packages available? Running Fink's "Update"command doesn't seem to change this.

Anyway, I thought I'd follow the instructions and copy the .info and .patch files across from the unstable directory to the local directory as per the FAQ. But now what? I cannot select the package using Select and Install doesn't see it either. Admittedly, I probably copied these files to the wrong place as I didn't place them in a subdirectory called net/?

If someone would give me some pointers as to how I get Fink to install proftpd it'd be much appreciated as obviously I'm not understanding Fink too well at this point in time.

TIA

Simon Forster
