But if you just need XEmacs or Emacs that runs under Aqua, I don't think you really need Fink. The following one is a port of XEmacs that runs on 10.2.x:

The only non-intuitive part [for me at least :-)] was realizing that I had to modify the X11 Apps Menu, and figuring how. Finally I grokked that I was to use the "Applications/Customize" menu. Then when I clicked the "Add Item" button I just got a solid colored line. "Hummm, pretty opaque UI," I thought (ultimately that was a sort of lame pun). Finally again I grokked that I wanted a command name and a path, like the pre-existing "Terminal" and "xterm" that come with X11. O-ho, I thought, xterm is probably the name of some executable somewhere. From Choi's README I gleaned that the executable of the newly-installed xemacs was called from a script invoked by the path /usr/bin/emacs. Finally I tried double-clicking on the left and right sides of what I'd originally thought to be a solid colored line and viola, I could enter "xterm" on the left and /usr/bin/emacs on the right side. Contact! :-)
Now it's off into emacs-land, looking ultimately for more than the available HTM Language mode -- also hoping to find color-coding, prettyprinting and the lot. But that's for another day. For now, I'll just happily write correct black-and-white HTML... Thanks a LOT for your speedy and helpful answer! :)
