Martin you were right - when I typed fink -i auto, I found I didn't have automake installed:
[David-Orlovichs-Computer:~] orlovich% fink list -i auto
Information about 2106 packages read in 5 seconds.
i autoconf2.5 2.54-1 System for generating configure scripts
i autoconf25 2.54-2 Upgrade package -> autoconf2.5
... so then I installed automake1.6 and automake (the upgrade):
[David-Orlovichs-Computer:~] orlovich% fink list -i auto
Information about 2106 packages read in 2 seconds.
i autoconf2.5 2.54-1 System for generating configure scripts
i autoconf25 2.54-2 Upgrade package -> autoconf2.5
i automake 1.6.3-2 Upgrade package -> automake1.6
i automake1.6 1.6.3-1 Tool for generating GNU Standards-complia...
... and then did my fink update-all again, and it is currently happily compiling libxslt - it has got past where it stopped before anyway. Am I right in thinking that automake should be a dependancy for libxslt?
It just finished compiling libxslt - thanks!
Cheers, David Orlovich.

i autoconf2.5 2.54-1 System for generating configure scripts
i autocutsel 0.6.2-1 Merges two X11 cut buffers
i automake 1.6.3-2 Upgrade package -> automake1.6

I am asking not because I understand what is going on, but because I see some tiny differences between your configure output and mine:
[]
checking for BSD-compatible nm... /usr/bin/nm -pHere I get:
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking how to recognise dependant libraries... file_magic Mach-O dynamically linked shared library
checking for BSD-compatible nm... /usr/bin/nm -p
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... /usr/bin/sed
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking how to recognise dependent libraries... file_magic Mach-O dynamically linked shared library
Note the extra question about sed and the different spelling of dependent. This means that we don't have the same configure script, although it is the same version of libxslt. This must come from different auto* packages.
