Hello all,

As I described earlier in the list, I had no small amount of difficulty in getting X and Gnome working. I tend to try to RTFM before bothering the list, and stepped through a number of reinstalls of X, (compiled from source, full binary installation, fink install xfree86-base, etc.) but was unable to get Gnome functional using the information provided in the FAQ or the list. What ended up working for me has made things strange, though still functional.

After numerous attempts to get things going, I managed to :

1. Remove Fink (rm -rf /sw)
2. Remove X (rm -rf /usr/X11R6 /etc/X11 /Applications/XDarwin.app)

per the the well documented help available at http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#removin .

I then reinstalled Fink. Easy stuff.

I then proceeded to reinstall Apple's X11 and X11 SDK. All worked well so far.

Moving on, I ran 'sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install system-xfree86' per http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/inst-xfree86.php . This process worked, at least apparently.

Now for Gnome...
I installed Gnome using : fink install bundle-gnome

All is good so far.

running startx from terminal goes badly...

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

OsVendorFatalError
AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...

This isn't a problem, because starting Apple X11 manually and then running exec gnome-session produces the desired result. However, Apple's X11 runs rootless instead of fullscreen, and, although Gnome Control Center says Sawfish is running, and provides the Sawfish Control applets, it is in fact NOT running, as is evidenced by trying to start any of the Sawfish applets. While Quartz is nice and all, I'd ideally like to have sawfish running ( maybe it's my inner geek calling ) and have Gnome working full screen as on a linux distro I run here, on a PC no less ;) .

To summarize and get to my questions:

Is there any way to use Apple's X11 in fullscreen mode, rather than rootless.
Is there any way to have Apple's X11 use a different wm.
What files would I need to look at, modify, or make available to make the above so.

Thanks in advance for your time, consideration and patience in this matter, and please accept my apologies for replying directly, as noted in an earlier post, the 'reply-to' address was somehow changed from the normal settings when receiving mail from the list (Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> )

Sean.
