Usually, "Can't get working directory!" means you are nowhere! Say you type "cd /doghouse" then "rm -r /doghouse" You've just destroyed the "current working directory". Now you are nowhere! pwd means print working directory. If you are nowhere, you can't pwd! :-) To prevent this, just type "cd" to go to your home directory first.
