Dave,

I had that same problem when I tried to use system-ghostscript from 
unstable together with Gerben Wierda's tetex distribution. 
If you are in this same situation the problem is that the present 
version of system-ghostscript is not working with Gerben's tetex.
The maintainer of system-ghostscript is aware of the problem.
A solution for the time being is to remove system-ghostscript and
install fink's ghostscript and ghostscript-fonts packages.
It is not ideal to have two versions of ghostscript installed, but
I have experienced no conflicts and all the fink packages depending 
on ghostscript, including gv, are working fine.
