hey all - i have a couple of questions, hope you can help. im on a g4quicksilver733.

-- question 1 - xinit

i just installed the latest x11 for osx beta from Apple, and when i 'exit' xterm i run
into a problem (which i did not have in the prior [2002] v of Apple's x11). here's the
text of what happens from my terminal:

[xxxxxxxx:~] xxxxxxxxx% startx

XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
_ _ _ _If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is
_ _ _ _newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
_ _ _ _reporting problems. _(See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Darwin OSVendor
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
PseudoramiX screen 0 added: 1152x848 @ (0,22).
PseudoramiX screen 0 placed at X11 coordinate (0,22).
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 1152x870 @ (0,0)

all of that seems ok, so now there would be an xterm window on my desktop. so if i
want to basically quit x, heres the problem; i type 'exit' in the xterm window and it
closes, im now back at the terminal. instead of quitting everything automatically (and
telling me it did all that fine, as it did in the earlier version), it just sits
there. i have to hit control-c, heres what happens...

^C
waiting for X server to shut down Quitting XDarwin...

xinit: _unexpected signal 2.
[xxxxxxxxxx:~] xxxxxxxxxxxxx%

then its back to a fresh line. so i guess the problem has to do with xinit, but i dont
really know what that is / does (a friend told me it deals with the control-key
functions, and initially thought i could approach the problem by trying to fix the
xinit config through inittab, but after a thourogh search for inittab on my comp
yielded no results we figured macs dont have it, and could not get any further with
the problem).

-- question 2 - i can't install stuff because...

using fink, i have tried to install both xfree86-base (another q, do i need to do this
since i have apple's x11 for osx beta installed? furthermore, the xterm window that
comes up witht he new beta is totally different from the prior one, it's the standard
osx looking window and not the linux style windows and cursor - is that normal? the
older version seems more authentic / superior?), and xmms - and all the requsite stuff
associated with them - using the command (for example) fink install xmms . both, it
seems, fail at the exact same point, they cant find a folder called Applications that
they're looking for. here's what happens in my terminal...

mv /sw/src/root-xfree86-base-4.2.1.1-3/usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.*.dylib
/sw/src/root-xfree86-base-shlibs-4.2.1.1-3/usr/X11R6/lib/
rm -f /sw/src/root-xfree86-base-shlibs-4.2.1.1-3/sw/info/dir
/sw/src/root-xfree86-base-shlibs-4.2.1.1-3/sw/info/dir.old
/sw/src/root-xfree86-base-shlibs-4.2.1.1-3/sw/share/info/dir
/sw/src/root-xfree86-base-shlibs-4.2.1.1-3/sw/share/info/dir.old
rm -rf /sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3
mkdir -p /sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3/sw
mkdir -p /sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3/DEBIAN
install -d -m 755 /sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3
mv /sw/src/root-xfree86-base-4.2.1.1-3/Applications
/sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3/
mv: rename /sw/src/root-xfree86-base-4.2.1.1-3/Applications to
/sw/src/root-xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3//Applications: No such file or directory
### execution of mv failed, exit code 1
Failed: installing xfree86-rootless-4.2.1.1-3 failed

i imagine simply adding a folder called "Applications" where the installs want it wont
do the trick (the permissions are not set for me to make stuff in that directory
anyaway, and seem to be locked) - is it not installing this folder and its contents in
the proper sequence perhaps?

-- question 3 - misc questions

when something has partially installed (like what happens in question 2), is there a
way (or is it even necessary) to remove this partial installation? does it do it
automatically?

is there a key combo or something on a mac that basically functions the same as the
"windows key" on pc's?

i miss collapseable windows (from os9), does anybody know how i can get them back
(aside from SimpleShade)?
