Anyway, I realised that in ~/, the following files were owned by root:
.ICEauthority .xftcache .qt
I guessed that these might have changed ownership when I reconfigured KDE as root.
so ... I chowned them to my user name and it starts up Ok again.

Hello Fink beginners et al.
I've been playing around with installing KDE again over the last few days (this time with Apple's X11 instead of XDarwin) and got it going OK this afternoon. However at one stage I started kde as root (with sudo startkde) instead of as my normal user. I got the startup configuration stuff again so I went through that again and then simply logged out again. I didn't really want to run KDE as root - I was actually trying to see if I could get rid of some of the error messages in the terminal while KDE was starting up ... famous last words...
anyway, now I can't start KDE as a normal user. I get the following output:
[myrtle:~] orlovich% startkde startkde: Starting up... kdeinit: Aborting. No write access to '/Users/orlovich/.ICEauthority'. startkde: updating theme cache Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory kdeinit: Aborting. No write access to '/Users/orlovich/.ICEauthority'. There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was:
Could not read network connection list. /Users/orlovich/.DCOPserver_myrtle.local.__0
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running! Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE:
No write access to '/Users/orlovich/.ICEauthority'.
KDE is unable to start. startkde: Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation. startkde: Shutting down... Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory Error: Can't contact kdeinit! startkde: Running shutdown scripts... startkde: Done. [myrtle:~] orlovich%
As you can see there is a write access problem. It was working fine until I started it as root. Anyway, any help will be much > appreciated.
cheers, David.
