Alexander,
Thanks for getting back to me on this. You are right deleting the sw directory allowed me to run the installer without a problem.
I'd say first check in /sw/bin and see what you have there. You may not
have init.csh, dselelect, or fink present. In such a case, you can remove
the whole directory with "rm -rf /sw" and run an installer.
Also, that's a really old installer. You should consider downloading the
0.5.3 installer.
How do I update fink to the latest version without having to run an installer? Can't I do this from Fink itself?
Yes.
"apt-get update ; apt-get dist-upgrade" for binaries should do it. "fink selfupdate" will do it for source
There have been releases where the upgrade gets confused. There's a link on the FAQ for what to do here:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#cant-upgrade
Finally, if you want to install anything from source, you may have problems
because the August 2003 update to the December 2002 tools breaks some
things. Check the fink main page (http://fink.sourceforge.net/) for more on
this.
I'm attempting to get the December Developer Tools.
Thanks again! George Spiese

Subject: [Fink-beginners] Can't install or update Fink
Importance: High
I've got the Developers Tools (August Update applied) installed. When I try
to run the Fink-0.5.0a installer I am told that an older version of Fink is
already installed. I downloaded the following files to do the update as
instructed at <http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/upgrade.php>:
apt_0.5.4-7_darwin-powerpc.deb apt-shlibs_0.5.4-7_darwin-powerpc.deb
In Terminal I navigate to the folder where these files are and type:
source /sw/bin/init.csh
I get no such file or directory. So I type:
Fink --version
I get unknown command fink. So I run:
dselect
And again get unknown command dselect
So, the installer will not run because it says I already have Fink
installed. When I try to update Fink, none of the commands work and the
directories can't be found. So how do I install or update this wonderful
software? Would it be best for me to uninstall Fink? If so I could not find
instructions on how to do that.
I get the journal so if you could CC me in on your reply, I'd apreciate it.
Thanks, George Spiese [EMAIL PROTECTED]
