Do you have anything installed that's an -xft2 variant ("fink list xft2"? These packages require you to install xfree86. Or, failing that, when you were choosing packages from the virtual dependency list, did you pick pango1-xft2 instead of pango1-xft1?
x11 is a virtual package and can't be installed/uninstalled by itself.
